Healthy people place a far bigger burden on the state because they have long lingering diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimers and need care far longer and more intensively.

 

Smokers die younger and also pour millions into the tax coffers so as far as the state is concerned smokers are very good value as far as the state is concerned.

Maybe the government could give the millions to the NHS from the billions they get from the tax from smokers?

maybe the smokers could cut out the middle man, give up smoking and donate whatever the paid a week for their fags to the NHS instead? So the government doesn't get decide what they spend that tax on?

Smokers are addicts. They have a habit that controls them. I should know. I used to be one.
