Anyone remember old abbey taxis

Recommended Posts

i worked for ABBEY TAXIS at the time "BABS" was on the radio, my call sign was "61" i also had another channel that was used if there was any good earners I.E. manchester airport or midlands airport runs, "BABS" used to give us a special message which we then would switch to another channel that none of the other drivers knew of !!! i got loads of "other work" that way, we drove cortina's then that were owned by MR hattersley, the only other driver i knew then was BILLY KIDD, I too used to work the radio when they were short staffed, good times remembered.

Didnt Babs marry P.J. and then move to Securicor.

I, along with a few of my schoolmates worked shifts at weekends and holidays refuelling the taxis with LPG. This must have been around 1980/81. Waited in the little hut on the forecourt (Rutland Road). Sometimes helped out cleaning the taxis. I cannot remember the name of the guy who worked the pumps most of the time.

Wasnt Bob Colton known as Liverpool Bob, and didnt midge sometimes carry 2 alsations in the front of the cab.

What was the name of the lad who drove the Abbey black cab that Norman took to Sweden, it had a union jack on the sides and day light running lights. He lived at Stannington and his call sign was 67.

I think there was a Pete Hancock, and the girl on the radio at night was called Babs.

Pete Hancock did indeed work for them. He was a very good mate of mine when he lived on Jordanthorpe in the late 1980s/early 1990s. His parties were legendary, as was his taste in practical jokes. He became involved in the Tenants Association and was the Chairman of Jordanthorpe T.A.

Lost touch with him after his wife passed away and not seen him for years, but I was told he moved to Mosborough. I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers him, or knows whatever happened to him.

Does anyone know what happened to Jack Greaves and his sister Marion? I was their neighbour 40 years ago. Kieth with the White Merc was my driver when I was doing the school runs. My Husband Tony Crookes used to drive a black cab initially for Burton Street garage, then bought his own, Very happy times unfortunatly Tony died last year.....

Jack was my uncle and he passed away in 1989, just about every taxi driver in Sheffield went to the funeral at the city road cremorotium. Marion is my gran and she retired and moved to a small village in lincolnshire.

I don't know what happened to Pete Hancock, he was a good friend of my family as was Ernest, he used to pick up my gran every morning to take her to work, really nice man. Norman Hattersley was not a nice man!
