Alien
Murder isn't deterred by imprisonment either is it? We have rehearsed these arguments over and over again. Should we ban imprisonment for murder on the grounds that its deterrent value is poor/non existent? My argument is is it a deterrent? That's what was asked in the op. Do you think it's a deterrent? staninoodle
we should listen to the mistakes of the past. Many innocents were hung, for crimes they NEVER commited, like most,id love to hang kiddy fiddlers, but how certain is certainty? Ok theres dna today, but in other crimes, that may not be FULL proof,in todays unhinged world,we get people confessing to crimes they were nowhere near. Has the DP worked in the usa?i think not

Should we ban imprisonment for murder on the grounds that its deterrent value is poor/non existent? Imprisonment serves to punish and reform, and when there's a wrongful conviction the sentence can be reversed. The death sentence serves to very briefly punish and that's it. Edit - it also serves to fulfil your juvenile revenge fantasies. 2nd Edit - so no one has suggested stopping imprisoning criminals, it's up to you though to provide support for your suggestion, pointing out that several different things aren't deterrents doesn't help your case. Steptoad
Forgive me if this has been pointed out already, but this is a long thread, and I've read as far as page three and it hadn't been. Nobody who has received the death penalty and had their sentence carried out properly has ever re-offended.

evildrneil
Forgive me if this has been pointed out already, but this is a long thread, and I've read as far as page three and it hadn't been. Nobody who has received the death penalty and had their sentence carried out properly has ever re-offended. And no-one who has been wrongly convicted and recieved the death penalty has ever been brought back to life...
boyfriday
Nobody who has received the death penalty and had their sentence carried out properly has ever re-offended. ..an excellent reason to execute everybody, then there'd be no more crime whatsoever.
