Some of Sheffield's most iconic gigs of the late 1970s and early 1980s are set to be immortalised in a new art exhibition.

Local artist Paul Staveley has been working with city-based photographer Pete Hill who shot some of the most famous gigs at West Street's legendary Limit venue.

He has spent the past few months working on bring gigs back to life on canvas like never before.

The West Street venue, which closed its doors for the last time in 1991, became internationally famous for its gigs and clubnights and was the subject of Neil Anderson’s best-selling ‘Take It To The Limit’ book last year.

The ‘Taken To The Limit’ exhibition is launched at Fitzwillian Street’s Washington venue on Thursday, November 25, starting at 8pm and entrance is free.

Paul Staveley said: "I'm working with Pete Hill to re-create some of The Limit's most famous gigs including Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cramps, two-tone artists like The Selector and Sheffield's own Pulp."

Former Limit DJ Paul Unwin will be playing a short set at the exhibition launch as he gears up for a full Limit reunion on Saturday, December 11, at Wellington Street’s Casbah venue.

Paul’s artwork has already proved to be a big hit with former Limit club-goers who’ve been snapping up prints of the inside and outside of the club – he’s hoping his interpretation of gigs are going to be as popular.

Neil Anderson said: “Anyone that ever went to The Limit can’t fail to be impressed by Paul’s paintings. They capture the sight and the excitement to a tee.”
