Vitamin B12 deficiency

Recommended Posts

I've been having B12 injections every 12 weeks for the last 10 years and will have to have them the rest of my life. I had a gastrectomy and consequently my body doesn't absorb B12 from food so I'm anaemic. I also have to take two iron tablets every day! You have the choice of arm or arse for the jabs..I prefer the arm. They are painless and make you feel like Popeye after his spinach!! Good Luck!

I am to have a third test in December for B12 deficiency. My GP said it is often a sign of 'age'!!!!! I don't really feel any different, though I am diabetic, and have angina. I don't sleep well, but put general tiredness down to age!! I am told I am not aneamic (sp?), I thought one went with the other? If my levels haven't gone up after the next test I will be on injections monthly, deep joy!!!!

In that case Hetty, I'm amazed that you aren't taking B12 tablets daily. They're as cheap as chips (though not as filling and certainly not as fattening ;)) Diabetes destroys red blood cells; B12 helps your body to produce them.

I have no idea why my B12 levels are low, I do have to see a Gastroentrologist soon because of my abdominal pain.

I have all these symptoms, althoug they are getting slightly better now!

Was diagnosed with B12 defiency 6 months ago, i, like you thought and felt like i was dying, wasting away or something along those lines, I now take methyl b12 which you can order online at amazon or more expensively at bigvits,You cant overdose on it so you can quite happily cure yourself if doctors wont take you seriously.

Hope this helps

From my experience, my mother had this problem many years ago and treatment as improved dramatically over the years, so think positive.

Go and see your gastroenterologist, as he/she is the best person to ask. With B12 deficiency, I think I am right in saying that its not due to how much you are, or are not orally taking, but has something to to with an inability of the intestines to absorb B12 properly .. hence the B12 anemia or deficency.

It may also be linked to ulcerative colitis. I suggest you go onto a more bland diet (white bread no nuts etc) and discuss this with your doctor. Try not to worry because my sister has recently been diagnosed and there are tip top treatments these days; its a question of learning to manage it.
