Mr_Squirrel
The most important thing to remember is... Common sense! Most people who get stuck, do so due to a lack of common sense. Avoid congested routes, if the traffic backs up in snowy weather, the snow can fall faster than traffic can move - hence getting stuck. When driving in snow and you come to a steep hill, let the vehicle in front get to the top before attempting yourself.. if one vehicle slips, the whole queue needs to stop and the whole queue then gets stuck. Exercise patience.. slowly gently catchy monkey. As for a 'kit'... Personal essentials:- Thick blanket/sleeping bag Extra clothing - gloves, jumpers, scarf, thick socks, sturdy boots. Water Travel kettle Packet soups Loaf of bread Torch S.A.K Bog roll Phone charger Rucksack (To carry your belongings in if you have to abandon the vehicle) Vehicle essentials:- Extra fuel (1 Jerry can) Compressor/foot pump (letting air out in snow can help traction.. but you need to put it back in) Shovel Bit of old carpet/underlay (for under the wheels) Towrope Jump leads are handy Prepare your vehicle for winter, check the oil regularly and anti freeze, correct mix of screenwash with extra in boot, make sure the battery is fully charged and keep a few clean rags for the windows. If you have to abandon your vehicle and walk, remember that the UK is not an Arctic expedition but a couple of miles in snow/ice can seem like a couple of hundred miles.. Stick to the main roads and dont feel tempted to take short cuts across rural land/moors. Drive safely.

Longcol
and a lighter? Always carry one so not part of winter kit - plus there's one in the car.
Agent Orange
Most of the stuff already mentioned. In Addition, first aid kit along with survival blanket and also a sleeping bag. I try not to travel too far when the weather is looking ropey, but you never know when you might get caught out.
