Passive smoking 'kills 600,000' worldwide

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11844169

The first global study into the effects of passive smoking has found it causes 600,000 deaths every year.

One-third of those killed are children, often exposed to smoke at home, the World Health Organization (WHO) found.

The study, in 192 countries, found that passive smoking is particularly dangerous for children, said to be at higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome, pneumonia and asthma.

Passive smoking causes heart disease, respiratory illness and lung cancer.

"This helps us understand the real toll of tobacco," said Armando Peruga, of the WHO's Tobacco-Free Initiative, who led the study.

Thank you to all the MPs who voted to ban smoking in enclosed public places.

at least its not this country that is not killing the kids....bet its all in the third world where everyone just about smokes

"The study used estimates of the incidence of specific diseases and of the number of people exposed to second-hand smoke in particular areas...."

So the study methods are flawed, and the report is by a lobby group that is anti-smoking. Hmmmmm...

I see the pro-smoking lobby have gatecrashed the thread to spout their rubbish that passive smoking is healthy.

I see the anti-smoking brigade are sticking with the traditions of the report and are making things up.

Why do you think that is?

Because they're dead?:hihi:

Nowhere does Armando blame passive smoking for infectious diseases.

The report links the two.

the point is that smoking and passive smoking exacerbates those illnesses.

Based on guesses.

You are indeed a moron.

Whereas you're simply rude and insulting:rolleyes:.

bet its all in the third world where everyone just about smokes

Or where the mortaility rate amongst children is high:|

Wow all those good points and not a politician interested. So get used to it because nothing is about to change because the politicians were all fooled by those studies despite you seeing straight through them.

Did the study account for the amount of smoke inhalation by children exposed to cooking fire smoke?

This indoor smoke contains a range of health-damaging pollutants including small soot or dust particles that are able to penetrate deep into the lungs. In poorly ventilated dwellings, indoor smoke can exceed acceptable levels for small particles in outdoor air 100-fold. Exposure is particularly high among women and children, who spend the most time near the domestic hearth. Every year, indoor air pollution is responsible for the death of 1.6 million people - that's one death every 20 seconds.

The Swedish National Board of Health have a vested interest in the NRT industry, which is dominated by Scandinavian brands.

Nicorette was developed by a Swedish company but GSK, Aventis and Pfizer are big players as well in both NRT and Zyban/Champix production

Did the study account for the amount of smoke inhalation by children exposed to cooking fire smoke?

Yes it did address cooking fire smoke.

So was that figure in addition to passive cooking smoke inhalation, or in combination with?

Swedish companies hold significant licences on NRT technology, and I believe the leading brand in Europe is Scandinavian.

People should simply switch to snus, it's safe enough for kids to use too.

This is ridiculous. How can anybody believe that 200,000 children are killed every year by passive smoking?

Even the most hardcore child smoker is extremely unlikely to die from smoking while they're still a child. Passive smoking?

That is not what the report said it meant that children die of things caused by passive smoking namely asthma, cot death, pneumonia etc.

What a load of B*****ks!:hihi:

This isn't a proper scientific study. Why was it led by the Tobacco-Free Initiative??? Anyone who has ever studied statistics will know how easy it is to fudge the figures to say exactly what you want them to say.

Just flip the figures round for example. Out of all the people that experience passive smoking throughout the world (must be in the billions), only a few hundred thousand experience ill side affects! I think that this is a very small number of people.

The FDA has advised that about 300,000 people die every year due to banana related deaths, should we stop eating them??

You don't believe the dangers, then why did you stop smoking in the presence of your new baby?
