zepstox
I worked at BSC Hawke ST at the time and we all took time out to watch the blaze. A bloke drove home to Mosborough to get his camera. There were several big explosions and people were saying there were stocks of whisky exploding, it was probably gas bottles. One of the lasses lived at the bottom of Kimberworth Park/Wortley Road and said her garden was covered with black cardboard which she was told not to touch, turned out to be the asbestos. ChamonixRob
I remember this very well indeed as it was me who called the Fire Brigade. it was in 1984, it started in the Hoults Removals(owned by Pickfords) warehouse which was a building attached to the main NFC depot. It was caused by an electrical heater which caught fire. The warehouse was full of palletised wooden crates which contained the contents of peoples houses in transit or just in storage. It obviously caught very quickly, the fire brigade arrived very quickly but it went so fast and I can remember it now as the flames moved to the roof of the NFC building and then descended into all the different areas which were being used to store all sorts of stuff. The main train line to London was closed as a result and the fire burnt for I think I recall about 3 days and was the largest fire in Sheffield since WW2 Long time ago now..I was quite surprised to see this on the web....
