Conrod
Benefit fraud is tiny compared to tax evasion and avoidance.Do you have any figures for this? Not being pedantic about your claim, I am genuinely curious.
boyfriday
Consider this, which has popped into my thoughts. You are the member of a charitable society which has decided to support a worthy cause and it is agreed that a collection should be made, and everybody should contribute at least £20 towards it. A hat is handed round and most members do put £20 in, but 3 only put £10 in, and one actually takes £5 out for himself. Nobody would have any difficulty in thinking that the person that took the money was worse than the three than only put a tenner in, even though, theoretically, the behaviour of those 3 cost more than the 1. Very good qq.

We have large sections of society where 2-3 generations of people have never worked. Children brought up in homes where neither parent works means more generations go onto do the same and so as the population grows more and more opt out creating an entire class of people that not only do not contribute but see no reason too either. Compare that to people who evade their tax. It takes money to do this, you simply cannot opt out, so the numbers of those who do this are limited by the nature of our tax system PAYE etc. Then you have those who avoid tax, this group is by far the larger of the to tax groups, but it is legal at present.
