jamiedo
Hi, does anyone know or has any information for Bolsterstone Glass Works? Me and my partner live in what we think is the old managers house to the glassworks and think it used to be called The Glass House. Thanks in advance. sparrow0114
Hi there, not sure whether you've had any luck with your search. I'm a glass artist based in Bolsterstone, hence the old glassworks have been of interest to me for a while. There's a guy at Sheffield Uni whose main research field is glass, he knows quite a bit, this is his uni contact page: http://shef.ac.uk/archaeology/staff/willmott.html There's an academic article here: http://geography.lancs.ac.uk/cemp/publications/07Karloukovski&Hounslow-Bolsterstone.pdf a bit of info (not much) here: http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/bolsterstone-conservation-area-appraisal.pdf and a bit more info there: http://www.stocksbridge-council.co.uk/local_history_print.htm But - Ta-Daaaaah! There was a guy who wrote lots of local handbooks around the Stocksbridge area, an he wrote a whole one on Bolsterstone Glass House - I've only ever seen a dilapidated copy, but in trying to dig his name out for you, I found out that his books have been digitised, here's the link to the Bolsterstone Glass House one: http://www.stocksbridgehs.co.uk/collection/archive/joseph-kenworthy-handbooks/handbook_number_6_275/ So, thanks for asking the question, it made me find the new digitised version
gregbish
Hi, If you can get hold of it (!) I'd recommend reading: Ashurst, D., Excavations at the 17th-18th century Glasshouse at Bolsterstone...., Post-Medieval Archaeology 21 (1987) pp147-226. It might be online somewhere? The article is obviously more focussed on the bolsterstone glasshouse itself. However, it does have a few arial ordinance survey diagrams of the buildings which would have been around the glasshouse at the time it was a working glasshouse/pothouse - it wouldn't tell you if yours was definitely the managers house but you could see if it was constructed at around the same time.
