Fogey
A question for all those who believe students should pay for their education through the now approved £6000-£9000 system. Do you believe that apprentices should also have to pay for their training?
andygardener
They do. They work for a fraction of the minimum wage during their training. Fair cost of their labour - the charge made for training them = what they get.
jrichk3
Having employed apprentices in the past, they do eventually positively contribute to output and generally get poorly paid, not much more than the dole really, so we save the dole money and get something back, more apprenitceships please. Sid Umpley
at the end of an apprenticeship a person will be trained and qualified to do a job at the end of a degree a person now has to go out, find a job and start to train to do it. Bladesman
Following on from what most have said. I did an apprenticeship and earnt just abit more than the dole but I got my qualification in half the time a Uni student would. I think more apprenticeships are needed rather than pointless degrees. Alcoblog
It's an invesment for companies to take on apprentices. I've seen a couple trained up in a year or so and produced excellent work. (some failed) It's really great to see someone learning a trade. In the construction industry the only way you can learn is by experience ... if the bosses are prepared to invest they not only see a profit but also a young person growing up ... it's a win win situation!
