In the end, my friend booked somewhere - we ended up at Alto's (if memory serves correct). On Knifesmithgate, above a pub. Curious location, but in fact the food was excellent, specially considering we paid £12.95 each for a three-course set menu which included a litre of wine between us, and the service was very friendly and perfectly competent.
