Cavegirl
Bankers only get bonuses if they have made a good profit for their companies. The system is instigated by the companies they work for to attract the best people for the job. Best people in this case means the people who can produce the best profit for the bank. That's why they hire them. The bonuses that the banks pay are taken out of their operating profit. They would otherwise pay it to their shareholders as part of their dividend. The banks and their shareholders recognise that the money is best paid to their employees as bonuses. There's no other solution under capitalism. If you know another solution please tell me what it is. PS - I'm not saying that capitalism is the best way I'm not so sure that providing large bonuses to bankers has anything to do with getting the 'best' people. I recently watched Adam Curtis' documentary about Nick Leeson and the fall of Barings Bank. It can be seen on Google video here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5294707894948692400# The over-riding impression that you get from watching it is that jobs in banking go to the 'boys' not the 'best'. Here, for example, is a quote from one of the rather posh receivers that dealt with the failed bank: "For a boy from Watford to bring a grand firm down, I mean there's a social insult as well, it wasn't even one of their own kind" Quite enlightening I think. ukjazzer
It's obscene what these bankers are up to. The country is going through a terrible period with a lot of people really struggling and finding things very difficult and we have this bunch of ***** paying themselves these immoral amounts of money. This country stinks !

I wont argue it's obscene, but no more than overrpaid (IMO) footballers, film stars etc etc. Put yourself in their shoes... if your employer was prepared to pay you large sums of money, would you turn it down? Treatment
Why does this country reward failure ? This country is falling apart coz the bankers have FAILED the nation. Why are they being rewarded then ? It is the British way, '' it's not the winning, it's the taking part''. I play to win, if I think that I am not going to win, then I don't take part. Most of the overpaid footballers are foreign talent, as Paul Weller said:- '' What chance have you got against a tie and a crest''.
Treatment
I saw a Banker begging in Sevenoaks High Street this morning. The poor bloke had a bit of cardboard around his neck, which said:- '' Hungry, and second homeless, please help''. Prat.

But if a footballer makes a ricket he could be dropped or sold to a lesser team. He'll plumit down the divisions before retiring to open an unsuccessful pub. If a film star stinks out a film he'll end up doing art-house stuff that nobody sees or third rate porn. When a banker causes the collapse of a bank and needs a Govt bailout they recieve a great wad of money, millions in pension payouts, a golden goodbye and a brand new job on equally obscene pay.
