Frozen paint / emulsion

Recommended Posts

Can't really see Gloss paint freezing, it's Oil based, are you sure it's not gone off? ie set in the tin because of age or poor seal on the lid. Emulsion is water based so could freeze. I too think it would be ok to use after it's thawed.

I have been putting off loads of jobs and have come to one today. Paint the spare room. Problem is the emulsion and gloss i was going to use has frozen. is it ok to thaw out and then use? any help please?:)

Bin it. Once you freeze an emulsion you lose the suspension. Oils will freeze solid like water - just stick some olive oil in the fridge to see the result. When both parts freeze you get larger crystals of each growing in the freezing mass and it seperates into oily and water phases that won't mix back again.

The gloss shouldnt have frozen solid, it may have gone very stiff but if it warms and recovers to a smooth consistency that should be OK.

I use one of the blade type mixers that fit into an electric drill and that has worked ok in the past, as for the gloss a lot of people do not realise that spirit based gloss paints are now being replaced by water based as all paints will be soon.

Even cellulose paint for cars is quickly being phased out and replaced with water based, what they will do about aerosol cans I do not know but it may make graffity a lot easier to clean off.
