Low CO2 coal - some kind of scam?

They can remove moisture & other impurities (including mercury) from the coal making it burn more efficiently. So you get more heat & less CO2 & other pollutants (for the amount of heat produced) than with normal coal.

Less other pollutants, yes; but refined coal, being more nearly pure carbon, will produce more carbon dioxide upon burning; not less. (Weight for weight, that is. Which is greener in the long run depends on numerous factors.)

Weight for weight it'll produce slightly more carbon, but coal is used for producing heat, not weighing things down.

It produces more heat for the weight too, and more kilowatt hours of heat per kilogram of CO2 emissions, because it burns more efficiently. It also has lower transport costs, due to the lower weight.

Having looked at the site, the numbers are a scam. It looks like it's 30% charcoal or something & they're claiming that's CO2 free, because its from trees & they absorb CO2.

However it should still produce a bit more heat than normal coal.

There are a lot of ways to make coal less dirty, it's got to be about the dirtiest fuel there is, so there's plenty of room for improvement. They have a lot of different treatments for it now.
