Joanna Yeates' murder - man charged

...

We speculate on all kinds of major national news, yet every now and again someone decides that a given topic is verboten and shall not be talked about. It's just inconsistent, which is probably the most important complaint ever made about moderating.

But they don’t all involve ongoing court cases do they.

In legal terms what does being released on bail mean?

Is the landlord still the suspect and they are struggling to find the evidence to charge, or is he effectively free but must stay in the area for possible further questionning.

Interesting developments:

Joanna Yeates: police warn public to be watchful while killer remains at large

I do like the way the media have managed to manipulate this one. What the police actually said was:

"Naturally we ask the public to continue to take the usual safety precautions. Lone women should avoid walking home alone after dark and householders should keep their premises secure and take care when answering the door to strangers."

His arrest doesn't even confirm that he was a suspect. They may have arrested him merely in order to trawl through his computer records or some such.

Release on bail just means they don't care to charge him yet but haven't completely eliminated him from the investigation. (Which they hardly could, since he is the owner of the property involved.)

It does confirm he was a suspect as the reason for his arrest was on suspicion of murder. That doesn't mean that he did it, or even that they'll charge him with anything, but he was a suspect at the time of his arrest.
