Hair advice needed (box hair dye/salon professional)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Needing a bit of advice with blonde hair colour! Since I was about 16/17 I've always gone to a salon to have my hair coloured, I'm now 25. My natural hair colour is a mucky blonde (havn't seen my natural hair colour for a while!) and the colour I have always had is a very light summer blonde and had highlights/bleached it over the years.

Recently I decided that I want my hair to be a platinum ash blonde, the last time I went to a decent hairdressers they told me it wouldn't go in one go but would get the colour I wanted when I went again in 6 weeks (fair enough).

I went again before xmas but to a different hairdresser (cheaper) and told them the same thing, but when they finished the colour, well, it wasnt what I expected and they made a bit of a mess (serves me right I supose - you get what you pay for!)

I'm now wanting to try and save myself some money and was wondering if it is possible to try and do it myself by using a box hair dye to get the colour I want, or because of what I've already got and had done in the past is it better off to stick to a salon and if so can anyone recommend a good hairdressers near to Westfield, or even a mobile hairdresser. I went to Loaf Hair at Crystal Peaks in the past and although they are good I think they are way too over priced.

Anyones help would be much appreciated :)

There is an expert colourist in Killamarsh Dorothy Hammond - she only opens a few days a week used to be thurs friday saturday. It is a totally different salon experience there - not your usual salon experience but very enjoyable if you are not in a hurry ! She has won may awards for colouring and specialises in colour correction I went after a really bad home colour experience. I have not been for a long time so don't know what her current charges are you would have to ring

Thanks to both of you.

I bought Loreal Recital Preference Permanent Colour in Lightest Ash Blonde today, I cut a little strand off my hair and tested it.....well it didn't go green or anything like that but it didnt go like the colour on the box either......but it did go an ash colour! So i'm just gonna brave it and do it tomorrow night, if it goes wrong i'll go to the hairdressers!

Just be aware that because you are using peroxide the colour of the strand test will be different to the colour of the hair on your head as heat speeds up the process. You will need to slap on conditioning treatments for a while afterwards too. Good luck!

Thats the colour that I use. My hair is naturally mousy coloured, I colour it a very light blonde. It seems to work quite well, I hate having yellow/orange hair and this one seems to work quite well, apart from last time when the ends of my hair went slightly silver/purple , I think I left the dye on the ends too long. Its getting back to normal now though, after a few washes.

Thank you suebeedoo and Isabelle.

I'm rubbish when it comes to stuff like this and just want to save myself some dosh instead of spending a fortune at the salon but scared of turning my hair green, lol!!

I mixed the stuff last night to test it and I didnt read the instructions properly and at 5am this morning it exploded all over my bathroon! :o

So I bought some more but had to buy John Frieda Precision Foam Colour as Loreal and ran out of the colour I wanted, they both came with conditioner treatments so I will make sure I use it!

I'm doing it tonight so we'll see what happens! eek! :)

I have always done mine myself and use either Nice and Easy or Recital Preference. Both have good results but remember it usually looks darker when it is first done and the colour it looks when you are doing your hair is nothing to go on. I can remember panicking when mine looked purple but it looked good when it was washed off. I usually go for champagne blonde or beige blonde now.

Yes, don't forget that your hair always looks darker when its wet, and ash blonde colours usually have purple or blue colouring in them to neutralise yellow/orange tones.

Try to make sure its even all over, putting the colour on small sections at once. Plastic hair clips (not metal) are good for pinning parts of your hair back, and a tail comb for picking up sections of hair. Use two mirrors or get a friend to help you make sure the back is even too.

After rinsing the dye off, I wash my hair with baby shampoo, then use the conditioner provided.

If your hair does end up slightly brassy, don't worry, you can get shampoo and toners which will make it look better.
