HMV Closes 60 Stores

Recommended Posts

well, i know it is only a very small number but is this the start of the end for the music shop as we know it,

everytime i go to HMV in town it is always busy, even with the bad snow so i cant accept that the weather will be to blame

or even music download sites as HMV have had their own site for a few years now so they must make money off that

it is a sad time for album buyers and downloading music is not the same as holding an actual album

i remember back in the 90's when OUR PRICE, HILLSBOROUGH RECORDS and VIRGIN MEGASTORE was around, and HMV having all these wooden buckets with all this vinyl in before the compact disk become big, it was a little treasure trove

sadly as with most things nowadays it's all about convenience. What's more convenient than ordering it on line,it being delivered the next day and mostly a little cheaper. Saves the aggro of trying to find somewhere to park or putting up with public transport

Yep there's hardly any record shops left in town, although HMV is till one of them. Remember when there was loads!

At least the Record Collector in Broomhill has survived - so far!

Shopping habits change. I went in HMV just before Christmas, and the queue was right around the shop, so I didn't bother. I buy almost all my music online now, it's cheaper and I don't have to queue, find somewhere to park etc.

I don't like Meadowhall much anyway, and I've got a grudge against town, since the council were on about a lively place at night a few years ago, then put up car parking until 830pm.

I think record collector will survive. Odd aint it, that main retailers struggle, and a little niche market survives, and seems to be doing well.

With the ever increasing student population in Sheffield an in particularly around Endcliffe and Ranmoor Campuses, I think Record Collector will be ok. It's a great shop.

Last time I went into HMV I walked straight out again...the noise level was enough to damage your hearing. I wouldn't be surprised if many of their staff suffer from deafness later in life.

Who wants to browse for music CDs in a night-club atmosphere. Much easier to do it on-line in the peace and quiet of your own home.
