HMV Closes 60 Stores

Recommended Posts

whats wrong with buying albums from tesco/asda?:loopy: its convinent and much cheaper then HMV

Answer: everything.

For example, Tesco and Asda have gone from being grocers to sellers of practically everything. They have turned into hypermarkets that squeeze suppliers so they can buy at the lowest possible price. Certainly, this is not done to pass the savings on to the consumer. Because of their huge range of stock and buying power it is extremely hard for traditional stores to stay in business. Also they often open open in retail parks which play a major part in killing our town centres.

On the subject of music purchasing, what on earth do these supermarkets have in stock anyway? A selection of CD which are in the charts and not much else. Certainly not a range of stock that could satisfy a discerning music fan.

:loopy: right back at you.

Thank you. Embarrassingly I've read it again and noticed about three typos.

Re: HMV, the range of music in the stores has been noticably on the decrease this decade as more and more shelving is devoted to DVDs, games for a variety of different platforms and bits and bobs such as iPod accessories. I find the stores' design has become quite unpleasant and you just don't want to hang around long. I much prefer tradionally styled stores with a bit of timber rather than steel, and plastic in gaudy colours.

I think they (and the late Virgin) have been shooting themselves in the foot for years now. I remember in the early nineties they stopped stocking vinyl in a blatant attempt to usher in it's demise and then, about half a decade later recommenced stocking 12" singles to attract the DJ market.

Part of the appeal of record shops was the hanging around checking out items from the latest shipment what would be demoed to you by the aging, slightly cynical / sarcastic vinyl junkie proprietors that tended to run these sometimes quite rough and ready establishments.

I would feel that if there is any gap in the market now music store-wise, it is for independents that stock a good range of new vinyl, quality secondhand vinyl, out-of-print CDs and specialising in selected music genres. Online presence is essential too, possibly including the dreaded eBay shop. Even then it could be a struggle to survive.

I went to HMV in Meadowhall to have a look round but their prices are much higher than play.com - especially for blurays.

They have no chance of surviving with internet prices.

For instance they were selling a 24 season I was after at £25 (in the sale reduced from £45). Looked on play.com and it was a non-sale item - but £15.

No brainer.

I got a bluray pack off the missus from HMV. Took it back because it was £25 on Amazon instead of the £60 at HMV. I got a creditnote/giftcard back and thought it would be easy to find something that I wanted that wasn't a ripoff.

Even the HMV website is way more expensive for anything I want.

I'll second the love of Amazing records mentioned once or twice earlier. I caught the bus thro to Sheffield on a saturday morning and spent hours browsing through the vinyl. Chatted to members of Heaven 17 and ABC in there on more than one occasion.

Am I really old enough to reminisce?:(

It's sad that a great iconic british brand should experience these difficulties.

As for me I believe they've sealed their own fate as I've experienced astonishingly bad customer service at the Meadowhall branch.

I now avoid HMV brand like the plague and so do my immediate friends and family. I can only speak for myself but I feel I'm probably not on my own.

I don't particularly blame the staff but there customer services policy dictated by their head office I find attrocious.

Wasn't Impulse the one next to the Albert and underneath Faulkeners snooker hall. I think they sold records and clothes.
