HeadingNorth
It is good advice to wear more clothing in addition to having the heating on. Edwina however meant people to wear the clothing instead of having heating on because of the cost. Which is even better advice. Turning on the heating should be the very last item on the list of how to keep warm.
HeadingNorth
£400? I don't think so ... AFAIK, it's £250 for the over 60s and £400 for the over 80s, living alone.. I keep forgetting that .. our neighbour is 85 and gets the higher rate.
Temper
I think we're arguing the same point, except that you want to bring a skewed political agenda into it. As we've both said, it's good advice, to keep the heating on low and wear warm clothing (and a hat if necessary) if we're just sitting around. We should all be doing that, not just 80 yr olds. Unless we're fortunate to be very rich, we all have to budget. It's not just the very old people that have low incomes, as Classic Rock has just pointed out. I am pleased that you agree that this government are attacking the elderly by scrapping the warden services that visits the old and vulnerable daily and ensures that they get to see a friendly face everyday. They are replacing them with volunteers if anyone can be bothered. If not I guess they would have died at some stage anyhow is the tory thinking. They will soon attack the fuel payments too. GrahamtheBla
It's not just pensioners in this situation. There are many low income families who are struggling. I can vouch for that my mate died the week before xmas,he couldn't afford to keep the heating on. He had his own house, he was on the sick. His brother found him, died from hypothermia he was 45. Rupert_Baehr
When asked about pensioners freezing to death in the 1980's a typical tory (Edwina Curry) told pensioners to wear wooly hats and longjohns in a "let them eat cake " type statement. ... You do surprise me! I would've thought something along the lines of: "Hop into bed together, do a little exercise and you'll keep yourselves warm" would have ben more likely from that source. horribleblob
No, it doesn't. All pensioners get £400 towards their winter heating bill - if that doesn't cover their winter heating bill there is something very seriously wrong with their heating system! Not only that, but any pensioner who has an income of £130 a week or less will get another £25 every time the average temperature remains below zero for a week. It's frankly impossible for any pensioner to be unable to afford to heat themselves. [My bold] And the affordable to solution to that is...? Joanl
There is also a lot to be said for thermal undies as well and I find that a scarf just draped loosely round my neck helps also. Having said that, we find we only need to flash the heating now and again because luckily, our flat seems to be very well insulated.

The tories turn a blind eye to people in such situations. Remind me again: Last winter was pretty cold. How much did the labour government provide to pensioners? Pernsioners usually have pensions. Did the last government link pensions to the average wage? Didn't the last government have 15 years to undo/repair the damage done by the previous Tory governments? Which government was it which taxed pension funds (a stealth tax) and thus reduced the value of pensions?
