botty1963
Just under 30 years ago I was an electrical apprentice at British Steel. During that time I can remember staying in an old building owned by British Steel that they were just starting to convert. A few of us were there to do some work - no idea exactly what it was however. I can remember spending a couple of evenings eating and drinking in the Cheshire Cheese in Hope - looking at Google it appears to be Edale Road, although I do seem to remember it as a dead end but it can't have been. After a few beers I remember then having what I remember as quite a long hill walk back to the place itself. Anyway, I know it's probably a very long shot, but would anyone know what this building was, or what it became, and is it still there?
hillsbro
Hi botty1963 - I used to have a few old Hope Valley postcards , and I sill have scans of these. One of them had the caption "The Guest House, Hope". A quick web search brought up a few more pictures of the same large house on the hillside. I don't know if it's the building where you stayed and I can't tell you anything about it, but thought you might like to see the pictures here. Blackbeard
The Firth Family had a couple of houses in Hope, I wonder if British Steel inherited them? One of them has now been converted in to apartments http://www.francisfrith.com/hope,derbyshire/photos/birchfield-house-c1955_h113012/ http://www.fineandcountry.com/more_details.php?profileID=50008503 Just a thought
botty1963
I think it was more like a hostel type building, it was very rough inside - All I seem to remember of the place was that there were no showers (or they were very cold) and that we had to sleep on camp beds whilst we were there - I think. I think they were possibly planning to do the place up and maybe use it as an outdoor centre of their own - just guessing there. Oh to have a good memory. I really appreciate the feedback, some great old photos hillsbro - and Blackbeard, that house on Aston Lane is a home and a half - if only I had £600k! Totley
Hi I went there in 1970 for a week from Brook School. We did outdoor persuits (rock climbing, hiking.etc) It was quite basic but we had a fantastic time. I think it was owned at that time by a charity in Manchester. botty1963
The building as I remember was more like a hostel, that said I'm struggling to remember a great deal about it. We drove through Hope today and seeing Win Hill behind it, it could have been somewhere up there, although Lose Hill isn't out of the question. I'm hoping that someone recalls the British Steel link which could be the pertinent one. I can't see that it can be that far from Edale Rd as we would walk back at night after being in the Cheshire Cheese. I'm even now questioning whether it was owned by British Steel - am I remembering something that isn't correct and was the British Steel link just the fact that we were all apprentices and that the people who took us were our trainers?
