Saga Brits outrun speedboat pirates

Recommended Posts

THE captain of a cruise ship carrying British Saga tourists foiled a pirate attack by outrunning the thugs.

Guests were having dinner on the Spirit of Adventure when a speedboat pulled up menacingly alongside them.

The crew feared they were Somali pirates and ordered the *holidaymakers to take cover below deck.

The captain hit the throttle and raced away from the crooks, who eventually gave up the chase.

Passengers told of their 53-minute ordeal. Susie Browne, 73, of Enford, Wilts, said: “It was terrifying. We were told to keep our heads down in case they shot us through the window.”

The ship, with 350 passengers and 200 crew, was on a cruise from Mauritius to Mombasa when it was targeted in a stretch of the Indian Ocean notorious for pirate attacks.

It docked safely in Zanzibar yesterday.

After the scare, the tourists calmly returned to dinner. A Saga spokesman said: “The soup was warmed up again. The captain got a standing ovation next day.”

Shipping companys stupid enogh to send ships close to these waters should have to pay for detachments of special forces on board.

A serviceman armed with a GPMG set at a high rate of fire would anihilate any of these craft in second (They downed Argie jets at San Carlos Water with them).

Paying for half a dozen such men on each ship would work out cheaper than ransomes and soon put off the pirates.
