Rupert_Baehr
Agreed. If for some reason you can't ride a bike (up the hills perhaps) then perhaps a 50cc ped (or even an electrically-assisted bicycle) might be the answer.
Hots on
To cover 240 miles ? Like the OP, i live nearly 6 miles from my place of work, when i was driving there and back 5 days a week in my 1.6 renault megane scenic i was paying around £35/£40 a week on petrol, so at least £150 a month; in a "small car" like the OP said she wanted, say, a 1.1 engined car, i would imagine a similar car routine as mine would cost around £120 a month. Hots on
If you mainly want it for commuting you should serously consider getting a bike. you will do that distance in 20mins and it beats joining the Gym! Whatever car you get you can budget £500 or more for insurance, 100-200 for tax, then you have servicing and petrol. My journey to work is roughly 5.6 miles according to Google Maps(feels longer ) and it seems to take me 40 minutes on bike. I've got some horrendous steep hills though. There must have been something wrong with your car or you were doing lots more journeys apart from the work run.
Hots on
There must have been something wrong with your car or you were doing lots more journeys apart from the work run. I was doing some other small journeys as well as the work run I suspect the OP will be too, we all do. So i reckon she will be spending around £120 a month on petrol. AJ sheffield
£230 a month without factoring in road tax and servicing, my journey to and from work only takes 10 minutes each way.
Cyclone
Two tyres and a service just set me back over £800. But I hardly use my cart at the moment, cycling to work and it's not small so that doesn't help these op.

MonkeyLover
I drive just over 6 miles to work also. Although I don't work every day, I use the car almost every day for socialising/shopping. I probably do about 80 miles per week. I spend about £50 per month on petrol, my road tax is only £35 per year. Had no repairs or new tyres yet, as the car is only 18 months old. My insurance is quite cheap too, £275 pa. I don't think I would sell my car and go back to public transport, no matter how much motoring costs. I'd say, go for it! - it's the best thing I ever did!
