cuttsie
I am researching the Sherwood family history, i believe they were originally from the Park area of Sheffield, they then moved to the Richmond area also Ridgeway. I am particularly interested in a George Sherwood who was my father and died about 1952
hillsbro
Hi - the deaths index shows a George Sherwood who died in Sheffield in Jan-Mar 1962, aged 63. He may well have been the George Sherwood who was born in Sheffield in Jan-Mar 1889, shown in the 1891 and 1901 census returns living in Manor Lane with his parents George Sherwood, a coal miner, and Rosina Sherwood. A George Sherwood married a Rosina Nixon in Sheffield in Oct-Dec 1884. That might give you a start!.

metalman
Hi - the deaths index shows a George Sherwood who died in Sheffield in Jan-Mar 1962, aged 63.. That should be 1952 not 1962 (which then makes sense with his age and the OP's post).
hillsbro
...The Manor Lane link is particularly interesting. ThanksThe 1901 census shows the Sherwoods at 52 Manor Lane, while nearby lived the family of George Nixon. This is most likely Rosina's younger brother. The 1881 census shows Rosina and George Nixon at 51 Manor Lane with their parents Thomas and Susannah, and five more siblings. In the 1911 census George and Rosina Sherwood are shown at No 59 Manor Lane, with the 22 year-old George Jnr., described as an "engine fitter". A George Sherwood married an Agnes Shaw in Sheffield in Jan-Mar 1912.
Banker
Hi hillsbro - you did well to find George Jnr. in the 1911 census - if you search on his name and age there is no result, so it seems he isn't indexed. This is perhaps something to bear in mind when searching. Is there a link to the Sherwoods who owned Richmond Road Garages? The 1942 directory shows "G. Sherwood & Sons, motor engnrs." at 535 Richmond Road. I worked with Terry Sherwood at the Midland Bank in the 1970s.
beechnut
George Senior turns up in the 1881 census, with his parents (yet another) George Sherwood, described as a "colliery horsekeeper" aged 55 and his wife Hannah, 54. George Sherwood evidently married Hannah Taylor in Sheffield in Jul-Sep 1847. The 1861 census finds them living in Union Street.

Possible births to George and Agnes are four sons - Ronald G., born Jul-Sep 1913, Kenneth J., born Oct-Dec 1914, Marcus R., born Jan-Feb 1916 and Eric J. Born Apr-Jun 1923. Ronald evidently died in Sheffield in 1998, and Marcus died in Blackpool in 1985.
