single identity groups

It's kind of a moot point really though. In the next round of cuts the vast majority of these groups who cater for one group or another are going to go.

I worked in the NHS until recently and it's already happening. The Sheffield BME Drugs service has been shut down, loads of service specifications for things like BME diabetes management courses or specialist BME smoking cessation clinics are being pulled because it's an uneccessary duplication of service.

Same with the council and the cuts they're making, if services are being cut to the bone it's not going to be practical to have groups and services that duplicate purely because they split their services off for an individual group.

It's stupid anyway, because these BME services work from the assumption that mainstream services will automatically discriminate against BME users. In the last 13 years the whole civil service, NHS, local government and legal systems have been totally geared towards ensuring this does not happen, so it's just not necessary anymore.

good points all these. but this is not a BME group. it's for people just recently arrived to gear them to the country. for everyone who's just come in.

it's probably gonna lose funding anyway, though.

It may well lose funding but there will still be points of access for similar types of advice such as the CAB and community groups that don't receive public funding.

And, y'know, it could turn out if new arrivals attend playschool with their children they might just meet some Brits who'll point them in the right direction?

Quite the opposite, if this story is to be believed. Having places which are specifically designed to allow foreigners to integrate can only be a good thing.

Sending a British person to a place which is designed to allow foreigners to integrate, is palpably silly - the British are already integrated. This is Britain.

but if this group is limited to "people new to this country" how are they supposed to integrate? or is it not integration with the non new folks?

yes, they might, and probably will. the thing is, though, those able to, do. people from English speaking places of the world, on the whole, do OK. the ones from elsewhere do need more help, and more 'basic' help that someone in a park might struggle to give. the CAB could do, but with all the problems with dept, crime etc they're snowed under.

still, something will have to, and will be, done.

integration can only happen when there are certain commonalities-language, same basic frame of reference etc- that's what the group's trying to provide before sending people on. there are other many different groups at the same place. i assume after the 'basics' people move onto other groups that do have locals and go on from there.

I can only think that if this is a group thats trying to integrate new people coming to this country, its going the wrong way about it because surely the people need to mix with people who are British. Doing it as the group is currently running will only breed racism as they are not mixing with everyone in the community

is no one reading why they were in the group. how can you expect 'mixing' when people don't know the language and are terrified and confused by the culture(both ways)?

integration is a process not an event. the group is the first step in said process.

why do most people need tour guides when they go abroad?

I'm obviously missing something here. Isn't it the British that these folks are supposed to be integrating with?

That's an interesting thing to say. As you point out, it is quite difficult to get help and advice from the CAB because they are so busy. Yet groups like these are set up to provide similar types of support, only the exclude the British.

That is quite a comparision, the ease of service from a group which seems to be very, very easy to access and the CAB who's services are extremely hard to access. That does strike me as a type of discrimination.
