Communications Chief Andy Coulson quits

Recommended Posts

Andy Coulson, a witness in the trial of HMA vs Gail and Thomas Sheridan has resigned from his role as Director of Communications at 10 Downing street. In his statement he gives the reason for stepping down as "Unfortunately, continued coverage of events connected to my old job at the News of the World has made it difficult for me to give the 110% needed in this role.

As regular readers will be aware Mr Coulson was called by the defence to answer allegations that a private investigator, Greg Mulcaire, hacked into Mr Sheridan's telephone answering service in 2006, the evidence for this being a notebook belonging to Mr Mulcaire which contained Mr Sheridan's personal details including his mobile telephone number and what appeared to be a "PIN" number used to access voicemail. Mr Coulson denied any knowledge of this or of the defence's contention that Mr Mulcaire had an "exclusive contract" with the News of the World while Mr Coulson was the newspaper's editor.

Mr Sheridan's lawyer Aamer Anwar, has now issued a statement

"“At the trial of Tommy Sheridan, Mr Coulson gave evidence under oath

that he had no knowledge of phone hacking despite Glen Mulcaire having

Mr Sheridan’s mobile phone number and personal details. His evidence

should now be re-examined by the authorities.

His resignation will not make this go away, members of the public

should not have to take legal action to get to the truth.

It is time for an independent Judicial Inquiry into the role of

Coulson and News International as the conduct of the Metropolitan

Police investigation has been unacceptable.”

It seems Coulson lied in court and sent someone to prison.

Former Labour minister Chris Bryant said Mr Coulson's appointment showed a 'fundamental lack of judgment' by David Cameron.

'To say this is long overdue is an understatement. Andy Coulson should never have been appointed in the first place.

'Cameron has clung on to him for dear life, long past the point when it became clear that Coulson's position was untenable.

'It is one thing to use Coulson in opposition, but to put him on the taxpayer's payroll at considerable expense and at the heart of Government shows that Cameron is completely unscrupulous.

'Cameron's Downing Street is not as pure as the Prime Minister would have us believe. It's not new politics, it's the oldest tricks in the book.

'I hope now finally that the police will be able to conduct the full, transparent, and thorough inquiry into phone hacking that we are still waiting for and that the murky truth will come to light.'

The phone-hacking scandal has dogged the News of the World since Goodman and Mulcaire's imprisonment in 2007, with a number of celebrities linked with the case.

It emerged this week that former England footballer Paul Gascoigne is to sue the paper alleging that his voicemails were interfered with by journalists.

Unfortunately, continued coverage of events connected to my old job at the News of the World has made it difficult for me to give the 110% needed in this role.

110%!

He should be locked up right now just for saying that.

It's seriously creepy, they bugged Sienna Miller's phone, her mum's phone, her friend's phone, Jude Law's phone and her agent's three phones.

Imagine some sweaty News Of The World hack listening to every detail of your private life!

Cameron has no shame, he will literally employ any old crook if he thinks it would help him.

Have they really 'bugged' these people's phones though? The word that is constantly used is 'hacked'. That could simply mean ringing their voicemail and taking advantage of the fact that most people don't change their pin-number from the default.

He resigned from his job at News of the World at the time. Why do we insist that that some people do not deserve a second chance and must pay a penalty twice over?

Even murderers and rapists get second chances and can go on to work after doing their time.

Of cause he deserves a second chance.

He can go and work in the local Travelodge like the rest of em,not peddle spin for the PM.
