Bloomdido
The whole English thing is a nice little earner. Black Rod, the wigs worn by judges, the finery, the high church. Losing the monarchy would damage what made Britain great. We do pomp and ceremony like nowhere else. We bottle it and export it wholesale. It is part of who we are, love it or hate it. And for that reason it will be very difficult to remove it. I thought the Diana episode and the subsequent happenings may have led to its imminent decline but they seem to be back on top. andygardener
Australia are trying to sever ties with the monarchy, as are NZ. Who's the king/queen of Canada? Queen Elizabeth II.
Harleyman
Australia are trying to sever ties with the monarchy, as are NZ. Who's the king/queen of Canada? No doubt there are republicans in Australia and New Zealand but it wont happen just as people with other agendas such as the Quebec separatists who would like to break away from the rest of Canada. All these kind of people get a fair amount of lip service from the public but in the end when it comes down to a hard choice and facing reality they back off the idea. Canada has a British style parliamentary system. Last I heard the Queen was still recognized as the monarch of that country.
JFKvsNixon
Queen Elizabeth II. Wouldn't that be Queen Elizabeth I for Canada, as they've never had a queen called Elizabeth before?

You wont win favor with the republicans making remarks like that. If they had their way they'd like to see England become just another run of the mill country with no pride of traditions, ceremony or color and more than likely some (nominally) radical socialist prat as president living in high style and splendor in the designated presidential palace. Wonder how long it wiould be before the president started to make moves to move into the vacated Buckingham palace.
