sccsux
It's many years ago, but everyone used to go up to Lightwood near Norton. Not in S5 but worth a trip as there is loads of space to practice, that's if it is still open? Norton's been shut years:D.
Alcoblog
Most supermarkets are great late at night for practicing doughnuts! ... Especially if you've got blue neon lights underneath the car and you wear a Hoodie! (preferably, if most of the power created by the engine goes to the speakers and not the wheels). sccsux
-Hand break off -Up to biting point and slowly accelerate. At which point, if you're facing uphill, you roll back into the car behind you. Get the biting point before you release the hand brake:thumbsup:. Not wanting to be a gloom and doom merchant, but (with regards to the carpark question) technically - unless you have the land owner's permission - the land owner could sue for trespass:(. Rupert_Baehr
And, should you have an accident in the carpark, your insurers might have something to say (like 'No way!') concerning their liability for driving accidents which occurred when you were driving on something other than a public highway. It might be worth checking on that before you find they are going to weasel out of paying.
Isabelle
I would say wait for your lessons because the instructor might use a different technique and then you'll be back at square one anyway. You could learn vehicle checks e.g. tyre pressure, checking oil & water etc.
megalithic
I'll go against the tide here and say get as many hours as you can in before you start your lessons, it's what i did and i really think it helped. Just remember all the silly basics, mirror, signal, manouver, 10 to 2 hands, feeding the wheel etc. As for getting used to one vehicle, i did all my official lessons in a corsa, it broke down the morning of my test and i had to use a micra. Not a massive difference i'll grant you but if you can drive one car you can drive any. The clutch will feel a little different and the gearbox too but that takes all of 5 minutes to get used to in my experience. Btw, all my "unofficial" lessons were in a mk3 escort. Thank you I see the same sense as you do.. especially when the money is coming out of my own pocket, theres no need to waste money on lessons which I can teach myself.. Oh and I'm aware of the difference between a carpark and a hill to the other poster I was going to put hand break and biting point as the same thing but decided to break up just as hand break = stop. gears+accelerator = forwards

sccsux
I'll go against the tide here and say get as many hours as you can in before you start your lessons And pick up all the bad habits of the person who you're with, which results in you having more lessons in order to first "unlearn" what you have been taught incorrectly.
