The OP needs to be sure that what was said is untrue and sufficiently damaging to their reputation to spend tens of thousands in legal fees for probably zero return. It's also hard to prove the spoken word without plenty of witnesses. If your ex brother in law said that you're a right old slapper it's unlikely to be worth the effort, especially if other people think the same.
