Is it time to stop issuing new driving licences?

Recommended Posts

Periodic re-testing. Not specifically designed to reduce the number of people on the road - any reduction woud merely be a side effect - but to improve the skills of those who do use the roads and to reduce the adverse effects of overcrowding.

Eery driver would be required to pass an advanced test within 2 years of initial qualification and would be required to re-test every 5 years. A driver who failed the re-test would be given 2 further attempts (at 2 month intervals) and if (s)he couldn't meet the standard by the third attempt then the driving privilege would be withdrawn.

I agree, some of the oldies driving round Dore village are a right hazzard. If they were to sit a re-test they would surely fail.

If the government were really serious about getting people out of their cars they would nationalise public transport and make it really cheep to use.

How would they do that? Would they make the drivers work for nothing? Would they provide the same standard of public transport everywhere in the country or just where you live?

Unless you'd be prepared to accept a bus every week or two, they would need millions of buses running around (mainly empty.)

What are you talking about? why would drivers not be paid? British Rail train drivers were paid weren't they?

Why would there only be a bus "every week or two running empty"?

I remember, several years ago, reading about one of the Latin American countries (can't remember which ) running a scheme in some of their very crowded cities. If I remember correctly they were issued randomly with either red or blue windscreen discs and could only use your car on the days that corresponded with the colour of your disc. ( red days - blue days) It radically reduced the amount of traffic and car sharing rocketed. People caught cheating were severely dealt with.

Thinking about it though, it couldn't have worked out too well or it would have been adopted elsewhere

Worst idea ever, if people can't get driving licenses they will just drive without one.

And what do you think is more dangerous, driving having passed a test or driving without having taken any lessons at all.

Op you really need to get your head straight.
