Strix
The right type of carpet actually makes a good insulating and sound proofing underlay to a laminate floor I'd make sure it was thoroughly vacuumed and steam cleaned beforehand though, as dust mites will breed in it
R.B Flooring
It's your choice but i wouldn't do it. You can get foam underlay for laminate that costs about £1 a square meter. Any guarantee with the flooring will be void if you fit it on top of carpet. Your flooring will be a fair bit higher than usual if it goes on top of carpet underlay and carpet so your doors might need planing down, If you are fitting it right and cutting the door frames out then you'll be cutting quite a bit out of them and if you ever want to go back to carpet then you'll have a big gap there where you cut them out. You'll be trapping whatever mould, dust etc is in the carpet so it won't be as hygienic. There's the chance it will come apart at the joints if it is to spongy. That's my opinion anyway. Hope this helps.
vinyl
Can you put laminate straight on top of carpet as a friend has and said you can lol It sounds a bit like tiling on top of wall paper. Certainly possible, but hardly desirable.
