Badlittlepup
You might have more luck trying here: http://www.spainexpat.com/spain/forum/ There might be people on there who know a bit more about the system in Spain.
MJ01
Surely a constant smile and a social life would be proof enough that she wasn't married...... Waits for onslaught

HeadingNorth
It's logically impossible to prove you are not married. No matter how many times you don't produce a marriage certificate, it's always possible that there is a marriage certificate lying around somewhere you haven't looked yet. I'm amazed that the Ibizan/Spanish authorities are daft enough to require an impossibility.

Rupert_Baehr
Could it be that the Spanish authorities will do whatever they can (get away with) to avoid paying out benefits?
foxy lady
It isn't uncommon, but is usually only required if you intend getting married abroad. The norm is to go to your local registery and get them to issue a declaration that they have looked through the records and you have not married from---to. Most countries will also accept a written statement from yourself declaring that you are single, and countersigned by a notary.
