Berberis
It doesn't have one as it is a nation and not a state. If it was a state it would have it's own Government. Instead it is governed from Westminster by the Government of the United Kingdom, as are the other nations of the UK apart from those powers that have been devolved from Westminster. A nation has a government. What criteria are you using to decide England is a nation?
mickw
When the USSR was in existence: Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and umpteen others. They were still nations but the state was the USSR. The USA is a nation state. I lnow the United Kingdom is a sovereign state.........that's what I've been saying. And that sovereign state is made up of 4 separate nations. So why does the translation of USSR (CCCP) mean the Soviet States of Russia?
decaff
A nation has a government. What criteria are you using to decide England is a nation? England is a country therefore qualifies also as a nation. The Uk is a state which also qualifies as a nation. There are numerous definitions of what a country/nation/state is
Chris_Sleeps
So why does the translation of USSR (CCCP) mean the Soviet States of Russia? It means 'the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics'. Russia was part of that union as the RSFSR, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The soviets had a way with acronyms.
TJC1
I completely agree with this. "English pride" makes me think of racists making excuses for their actions, don't they normally use the term "English Pride"? I was born in England, its pretty good, but I like a lot of countries, that's about as far as it goes. Why is it people from England are accused of racism for being proud to be English? you can like other countries and nationalities and be tolerant and still be proud of England. Maybe thats the problem, we are not as a nation proud to be English, therefore we treat it like dirt and let people come in to ruin it and sponge off the land, and yes I'm talking about our immigration problem. The nation "England" isn't recognised on the world stage except in sport. It is recognised as the UK. I take your point though that you can be proud of England and not be a racist but sadly the images drummed up when people talk about being "english" and not british tend to be ones of violence and racism. Sad but not irreversible. The swaztika had positive meanings for hundreds of years, good, sun, life etc. untill the nazis adopted it.

I don't think national pride is necessarily an unhealthy or racist thing but yes, it has been hijacked by meatheads and cretins and it's one of the first associations that comes to mind. It also makes me think of patriotism, an illusion that has made it easier for the ruling class to send young men to their deaths in countless senseless wars. RJRB
I agree with those above who find it a strange concept. I could list people or events relating to England and it's people, where I would take some pride by association. However,I would have no problem in producing an equally long list of shameful events or actions which I would prefer not to be associated with. Similarly,I am happy to be born and bred in South Yorkshire, but the proud Yorkshireman as typified by Dickie Bird,Harvey Smith,Ian McMillan, Fred Trueman etc.,are an embarrassment. All we can try to do is to make someone proud of us ,or be proud of someones achievements. The rest is an accident of birth.
flamingjimmy
^^ This is similar to my view about national pride. If you feel proud of the good aspects of England's past, should you not also be ashamed of the bad parts? This question is for anyone who answered 'yes' in some form.
