Berlusconi..what a legend..

Recommended Posts

Is that really what you want in a politician? A corrupt, adulterer with a penchant for very young girls and who is involved in crime at the highest level?

What were you saying about our politicans when they were found guilty of fiddling their expenses? Did you condemn this or did you say : "A bit loopy but the guy does just what he wants. I'm glad he's got balls like that".

I dont care about the expenses scandal, theres other threads for that, this is about Berlusconi.

If you cant see the funny side of the Berlusconi story or admire the man on some level for getting away with what he does then you are one very serious person indeed.

Yeah, but he does make the trains run on time.......or was that Mussolini? ;)

In point of fact, Mussolini only ever made one train run on time. It was the one he was on when he went to meet the Italian king and he ensured it wasn't late by forcing all other trains to be rerouted.

As to Berlusconi, a legend he may be but for all the wrong reasons. He may be a role model for putative Don Juans but in public he is similar to the puritans. He had a painting of a nude woman altered so that her breasts weren't visible in order not to upset the nations Christians, among other artistic atrocities.

No, sorry. Can't see the funny side of being a " neo nazi party and a bit loopy" a " guy just doing what he wants, sex parties with 20 strippers, then denies everything to the media". He's the leader of a country and has enormous responsibilities to the people. Plus he's being paid out of the public coffers for being corrupt.

No, I don't find anything to admire.

A legend for all the wrong reasons is true. Im not defending his politics, ethics or cultural vandalism. Thats the irony of it. He keeps doing outrageous things and getting more votes.

i have a soft spot for libertines in government, not least because they tend to be a lot less dangerous than puritans. Take the case of Danton vesus Robespierre. The latter was a puritan in lifestyle, but was also paranoid megalomaniac with homocidal tendencies, whereas Danton was a womaniser and bon viveur . Hitler of course was also abstemious. Moreover, many people would be alive today if Tony Blair had spent more time chasing skirts rather than the illusiory 'weapons of mass destruction'.

Should politicians be judged by their private lives?

It is time to elect a new political leader, and your vote counts. Here are the facts about the three leading candidates.

Candidate A: Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologists. He’s had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

Candidate B: He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whisky every evening.

Candidate C: He is a decorated war hero. He’s a vegetarian, doesn’t smoke, drinks an occasional beer and hasn’t had any extramarital affairs.

Which of these candidates would be your choice?

Def: A libertine is one free from the restraint of social norms and religious morals.

So you're OK with all the MPs who have been accused of lack of morals, i.e. freedom from the restraint of social norms, for having claimed for such things as moat cleaning and duckhouses?

Strange standards indeed.

That's probably due to the fact that there are more men around who admire people of dubious morals and doubtful honesty, than there are people who want their politicians to be upright and honorable, perhaps?
