Fareast
Maybe that 's why witches were put to death in the olden days ? By mistake ? It wasn 't the ' Fire & Brimstone ' smell that permeated their clothes......etc.....It was probably down to some form of baked beans ?

The medieval diet was extremely rich in things like beans, onions and leeks so you may be onto something there.

Fareast
Flowersfade :- A very easy solution to that little problem ! Just as in the U.K motorists have to breathe into a sort of balloon, well a similar instrument could surely be introduced to test for ' recent activity gas expulsion ' [ or a 'rage-o-meter' as it might be called ]. Suspects could be stopped and taken into a small roadside, portable booth where a sort of balloon could be inserted into the relevant orifice. A reading, say, of over 50 % of objectionable gas could mean the culprit was locked away in a lavatory for 7 days-----or shot ? It seems a bit of an expensive way to deal with such a personal problem.......but, as we all know too well in the U.K., if a government want to interfere in all aspects of their citizen 's lives, absolutely no expense, time or effort is spared !
