rubydazzler
There was a big workhouse at Nether Edge which later became the NE hospital, which is now private housing. At the time your ggrandmother worked there, would Heeley still have been in Derbyshire?

At the time your ggrandmother worked there, would Heeley still have been in Derbyshire? People living south of the Meers Brook would have been living in Derbyshire until 1933, but historic Heeley was always in Sheffield.

Gilly Jnr
If memory serves me correctly, the gymnasium/dining room at Nether Edge Grammar School was part of the workhouse.

extaxman
I have a copy of an 1840 map of Sheffield. It shows the site of Crookesmoor Workhouse at Crookesmoor Rd. When I was a kid (about 50 years ago) we used to call it Crookesmoor School.
DUFFEMS
The nearest workhouse to Heeley was the Ecclesall Bierlow Workhouse which later became Nether Edge Hospital and the admin building across the road became Nether Edge Grammar School then laterly Brincliffe Grammar School which closed in 1965. Nether Edge Hospital has since been renovated and is now a private housing development and the former Nether Edge Grammar School/Brincliffe Grammar School has also been renovated and is now private flats. I believe the Workhouse closed in 1929 and became Nether Edge Hospital.
