Which will be the next Arab state to topple?

Recommended Posts

One question a lot of people involved in the area are asking is why hasn't Obama stepped in and told Mubarak to go... (not stay!)

If he did that, how long would it be before people complained about him sticking his nose into another country's business? He hasn't actually said "Mubarak should stay" and he can probably get away with acknowledging the status quo without damaging himself politically.

(That is, of course, if he even knows who the Status Quo are.;))

I wonder whether Obama has forgiven Mubarak for this?

Perhaps Obama has other things on his mind. There's a Presidential election coming up next year.

No, it's strange that the US isn't saying anything, especially with all the accusations of Mubarak being the US's lapdog in the region...

Yes, like I said in post #13.

There is a vacuum forming and the only group really ready to step up are the Muslim Brotherhood, and they already are! This is supposedly why the US aren't pushing for Mubarak to go, otherwise they supposedly would (even though many say Mubarak is their puppet!)

Added to this you dont just dump an ally and friend when events like this happen. To do so would only make other middle east leaders friendly to the US think that Obama was a man who would just as soon dump them also if they were to be in this situation. Arabs put a lot of store by the loyalty of friends.

Bush's secretary of state Condaleeza Rice and lately Hilary Clinton have pressured Mubarak for a long time to bring about democratic reform but they can only work within their limitations.

Obama now finds himself having to walk on a very thin line which involves diplomacy of the most delicate kind.

This is true, and he has maintained a reasonably stable nation for quite a while, so, he's not the worst in reality. Very probably better than what will come, but maybe i'm wrong on what will come?
