Bigthumb
The disgraced Labour MP for Livingston & West Lothian, Jim Devine, is on trial at Southwark Crown Court charged with false accounting. The court heard that Devine used a book of blank invoices to submit claims for building work that had not been carried out. Devine was only elected to Westminster in 2005, and was serving his first term as an MP. Perhaps the vetting procedure should be tightened up. boyfriday
Unfortunately these folks get a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again. Losing your status. Losing your job. Losing your pension. Losing your liberty. I'd place that a little higher than a 'slap on the wrist'.
Anna Glypta
Losing your status. Losing your job. Losing your pension. Losing your liberty. I'd place that a little higher than a 'slap on the wrist'. Perhaps you would, but who said anything about him losing his pension? MPs who lost their seats at the general election also lost their jobs and received a large package of compensation payments. I've not heard that jailed MPs don't get the same. Rupert_Baehr
... Devine was only elected to Westminster in 2005, and was serving his first term as an MP. Perhaps the vetting procedure should be tightened up. What vetting procedure? When the local party in a seat in Norfolk rejected a candidate, the party HQ told them to think again because the party leadership wanted that candidate to get the seat. The public are permitted to vote at a general (or bye) election, but if they want a particular party to win trhe seat then they have to vote for the candidate they are given. The local members have a choice in who stands as their candidate, but if they make the wrong choice they will be invited to choose again
Bigthumb
I see Devine is claiming that other MPs told him his claims were OK. I'm not sure that will wash.
Vague_Boy
The local members have a choice in who stands as their candidate, but if they make the wrong choice they will be invited to choose again Ahh... democracy in action. Sadly they're (almost) all a bunch of crooks and liars. There's one or two that might be worth something but as for the 648 others in Westminster, what a shower, an absolute shower. The members of the party get to vote on the candidate. If they choose not to vote then they are not exercising their right to vote. What else can be done. As I posted on this forum in another thread some time ago: Vote for Guy Fawkes! The last man to enter Parliament with wholly honest intentions. ...and then they burned him on a bonfire at Samhain.... Was Alistair Campbell running the show back then? Perhasp it was 'a good day to bury bad news' :hihi:
