Look North/ Look Leeds

As someone who counts on the media for my work, I can assure you that it has always been 'Look Leeds'. Years ago the proportion of articles about Leeds, etc, far outweighed any articles about Sheffield, to the point where some weeks you'd be lucky to get a mention of Sheffield sport!

Hi- I hope you dont mind me using the forum like this- but I thought I ought to reply to your comments about our programme.

Assuming the game is on we'll definitely have a report on our main show tonight at 6.30.

Earlier in the week we thought we ought to run preview reports about the Sheffield derby and the Leeds-Doncaster match (I know they're in League 1 but it is the first time they've played for 50 years and they both may go up). We didnt want to show them both on the same night because not everyone is into football; so we decided to show our Leeds-Doncaster report on Thursday and our report on the bigger match - the derby- tonight.

On our main programme at 6.30 last night, before we broadcast the report, we explained the Sheffield derby report would be tonight. When we showed the Leeds-Doncaster report on our shorter bulletin at 1025 we neglected to give that explanation- and we should have - I'm sorry.

We did run brief clips of both Brian Laws and Bryan Robson at breakfast time this morning. Our bulletins in the morning are so short we didnt have time for much more then - our report tonight will be more detailed.

I've been editor of Look North for a year now. I know a lot of people in Sheffield think we're too 'Look Leeds' - and so I've been trying to move reporters out of Leeds, and to cover more stories in South Yorkshire- especially the really big ones like the floods.

All being well, we're also hoping to launch a brand new news service- just for South Yorkshire- next year.

Thanks for reading this far. If you ever want to get in touch directly, you can email me at look.north@bbc.co.uk.

PS I mentioned this last time I was on the Forum; just in case you were wondering- I'm not a Leeds fan. I've lived in Yorkshire for nearly twenty years but i'm a southerner by birth - and I've been a Wimbledon fan all my life. Don't hold it against me !

It's not just about sport - it's about any mention of Sheffield (in any sense let alone a positive one - LN always seems to go for the negative, if there's ever a mention!)

I'd bet that you don't keep a tally - or whatever - of the number of articles (and content) relating to which areas they're in?!

Yup. They did though have a 'report' on tonight about the closure of The Co-op in Sheffield city centre. A twee, smug, smiley, quaint and patronising look at 'how things used to be'. No mention at all of the jobs to be lost and the rapid cloning of a city centre. Dumbed down 'reporting' at it's very worst. Still...its what we have come to expect.

It's been like that for as long as I can remember. My mother used to comment on it frequently when I lived at with my parents and I moved out about 13 years ago. Does Sheffield appear on the map during your weather report because from what I remember it never used to. When Leeds won the title in 92 I seem to remember most of the show being dedicated to it. Interviews with players and all sorts. When the Owls won the League Cup against Man Utd the year before and the Sheffield clubs played their most high profile derby ever at Wembley in 93 I can't remember seeing anything more than a few highlights. Can you honestly say you don't prioritise Leeds above the rest of Yorkshire?

Its historic, Wednesday had a fanzine called War of the monster trucks for donkeys years.

commerating the fact that after the cup win in 91 the program switched to a moster truck program 10 mins later instead of running with post show interviews.

I guess Romeo had it right--" A plague on both your houses"

There are more important things to compare Sheffield and Leeds on than sports supporters hurling abuse at one another.

I've lived in Sheffield for many years and love it here, but I also lived in Leeds and have fond memories of it. They each have their distinct character and their excellencies. We should be comparing them on their record of sensitive city heritage protection, and regeneration, and their cultural record, amongst other things--on a whole spectrum of things that make living in a vibrant city worthwhile.
