mike edds
i have 2 huge trees in the back garden one is an apple not sure on the other. I want them both down for the summer, but in the past even just trimming them is difficult so i thought about killing them before trying to cut them down. Anyone know the best way and how long it takes thanks here is the best way
wednesday1
Cut the tree down then saw a X in the cross section of the stump about 1cm wide and deep. This should do it, but to make sure paint the stump with the poison others have mentioned which is called Round-up.
chimay
I've just remembered that many years ago my ex killed willow tree by drilling holes down into the trunk then pouring petrol into the holes. He did NOT set the tree alight. He had to pour petrol in regularly over several weeks but it did work in the end.

Anyone know the best way and how long it takes thanks You should be ok to take the apple tree down but you should find out what type of tree the other one is as no matter how old or who planted them, certain trees are protected, ie, Oak trees, silver birch etc. Best to get a "licenced" tree specialist in to do the job as they will know which it is and are also insured if they cause any damage. Don't just take their word make sure you see the licence.
Berkana
Yes you need to check that you can first. And you need to make sure you do it before birds start nesting in it as it's illegal to chop down a tree with a nest that's in use. Also make sure there are no bats living in it (if there are any bits of loose bark)
Agent Orange
Leave it to a specialist. Failing that, once you are certain said trees can be felled, chop them down. No need to poison them, unless you are planning on leaving the trunk in the soil.

VideoPro
I hope the trees come back to haunt the OP. That would make a good thread.
