Government to consult over moving May Day bank holiday to October

Recommended Posts

Just read on BBC news that the government is going to launch a consultation on whether to move the May Day bank holiday to October. The idea is that it will generate a boost to tourism.

On the one hand I think bank holidays are all bunched up in April and May and it would be good to spread them out over the year. On the other hand why does it have to be the May Day bank holiday and not the one at the end of May?

Should we perhaps have another October bank holiday in addition to the 8 bank holidays we already have? The United States have 10 bank holidays per year and Germany has at least 9 with some parts of Germany having up to 13 (Bavaria).

maybe its to stop the relationship between may day and protesting?

"In many countries, May Day is synonymous with International Workers' Day, or Labour Day, a day of political demonstrations and celebrations organised by the unions, anarchists, and socialist groups"

I think we should get another one. This year and next we do (Royal Wedding and Queen's jubilee).

The problem is, as said above, they all come at the same time in Spring. Personally I would reduce Easter to one day, and give a Bank Holiday in July, and make the one at the end of August two days. Who wants a Bank Holiday in October when it's cold, wet and dark?

As one of the comments says in the article, surely the only tourism this will help is that of other countries?

Nope, I let a holiday cottage in England and weeks with a Bank Holiday in them get booked easily and can be sold at a higher price.

I think May is a better month for a Bank Holiday than October just because it's lighter and the weather is better.
