If you had £3000 to spend on a car..

The ad men would have people believe that Skodas are essentially VW/Audi but they are far from it, experienced mechanics I know say they just dont have the same build or feel, that said the Octavia VRS is a nice motor.

The mechanics of skodas are VW, the interior materials are cheaper but the quality is equal. Im vw through and through (got 5 of em at the mo) but vw build quality has declined since 1991, the mk2 golf was the last true tank-like vw.

And a vw badge doesent always mean built by vw, i had a polo16v, built at the seat factory in spain. It was crap.

my sons had two mark 4 VW golfs, the first one burnt about a litre of oil per week, then the gearbox went on it, he got another one and now that engine has started burning oil also, DO NOT GET ANY MARK 4 GOLF WITH A 1.4 ENGINE. utter piles of crap.

I understand these engines are pretty decent if looked after from day one, but they rarely are, so if your going for golf i'd either get a mint mark 3 or a mark 5

As I am not working I thought I should downgrade so flogged my 06 Civic and bought a 05 plate Saab 9-5 estate 2.2Tid. It's bloody massive but it runs like a dream, heated leather seats, excellent stereo, Xeon lights, climate control, all the extras and because it has 150k on the clock I got it for £2400. It sounds a bit like a tractor but other than that I can't fault it. 40mpg, massive amounts of space, really comfy and the advantage of Phill smith saab specialist down Attercliffe who is a star. Check out high milage ones but don't get the 3.0 diesel as the engines are rubbish.

The specs filter down from the VW/Audi/Seat and most Skoda dealers are quite up front about that. But my experience of owning a VW and a Skoda is that the build quality is just as good, and they feel the same. With any you'd have none of the hollow door sounds and rattling you get with the likes of Ford.

1) Get a Citroen (sp?) Saxo - £1500?

2) Lower the suspension - £150?

3) Black out the windows - £50?

4) Fit a 200db boombox stereo - £200?

5) Fit a huge rudeboy exhaust that shakes the foundations of nearby buildings - £200?

6) Drive round North Sheffield and pickup a couple of trollops, then take 'em out for fish & chips, a bottle of white lightning and a snog in the back seat - £10?

Total: £2110 (est)

Still got £890 left for insurance and tax, or picking up another couple of birds

With that budget id be looking at an Octavia Tdi, essentaily a bigger golf but you can get a lower mileage/better spec example for the money.

But the image :o

How could you stand to be seen driving around in such a thing?

BWAHAHAHHAAHAHAHHAHAAH!

If you want a VW then look at the bigger cars.

They command less of a price and give you more in terms of kit.

You can pick up a top of the range highline TDi 130 passat saloon for a little more than your budget.

Sport models are a bit less, and trendlines are a bit less again. Also lower insurance groups than the golf.
