Tony
How would you feel about a 4 day school week instead of 5? The statutory 25 hours could be delivered in fewer days, meaning that savings are made in running costs and maybe the school buildings can be used for something else on the other days - maybe adult literacy, community groups, children's or adult sports and excercise, vocational learning, etc? medusa
If kids went onto a 4 day week then how would all of the working parents arrange their working week and still afford to live if they got paid for 4 days instead of 5?
Tony
How do you think it might work? The OP has a few suggestions.

You aren't radical enough, Tony. By the time kids reach secondary school, they might only need three days in school, face to face with a teacher. I'm sitting here messing about with (yet another) learning portal. In theory, it allows me to set and mark work for individual students. I can guide them and encourage them over the internet, to their laptop or mobile phone. It works quite nicely and opens up a whole world of new possibilities. They will still need some face to face stuff, but I can see the day when that is much less than five days a week. Then my productivity would go up, because I could teach more children. I'm not sure that I like that prospect.

As long as my employer - and my partners - would be happy with us putting in our 40 hours a week (and often more) in 4 days. We have asked - the answer was a big no . Hadron
If you introduce some vocational studies or even sport on the other day that takes place at a different place it could make the week more bearable for all.
alchresearch
It wouldn't work, there aren't enough hours in a normal 5 day week. There is so much time lost at the start and end of every lesson barely 40 minutes out of an hour is effectively used. We need to change the way schools operate. Primaries should keep hold of the kids until they're 13 or 14, then high schools should be more American - 14 upto 18 and incorporate colleges. The dimwits and troublemakers who don't want to learn should be carted off to specialist schools so they can't disrupt the people who want to learn.
