INTERVIEWER
The only song in the charts in 1980 that could be called a protest song is 'Do nothing / Maggie's farm' - The Specials. Quite wrong. Left-wing firebrand and anti-poverty campaigner Phil Collins 'In The Air Tonight' anthem was about an anti-Thatcher socialist revolution. This section of the record is specifically aimed at Maggie: Well, if you told me you were drowning I would not lend a hand I've seen your face before my friend But I don't know if you know who I am Well, I was there and I saw what you did I saw it with my own two eyes So you can wipe off the grin, I know where you've been It's all been a pack of lies Phil Collins was doing this sort of anti-Tory stuff a long time before the likes of Billy Bragg... Maybe its just an urban myth, but i thought that lyric was based literally on something that happened to Phil Collins. Some guy was struggling in deep water and Phil froze and did nothing. wednesday1
Looming? Were you fast asleep in 2008? 2008 was the INTERNATIONAL CREDIT CRUNCH not a Goverment induced recession.
Hots on
2008 was the INTERNATIONAL CREDIT CRUNCH not a Goverment induced recession. We all know about the dodgy bankers roles in all this(under Labours watch), but can't you find it in yourself to concede that Labours massive over spending contributed greatly to the mess the countries in? When The Sun did Kinnock's head as a light bulb with the caption of 'Will the last person to leave the UK turn off the light' - if Labour win, back on polling day in' 92. Collins was one of those who was gonna quit the country. Well twenty years on with Lab in power for 13 of 'em the muppet is still here! Edit: Apparently not now according to John X
John X
Quite wrong. Left-wing firebrand and anti-poverty campaigner Phil Collins Doh! Is this the Phil Collins who threatened to leave Britain if the Labour Party taxed too much of his income and is now living as a tax exile in Switzerland! The problem with you shouty extreme right-wingers is that you never stop and think before spouting your nonsense! As we're talking about politics, music and the '80's, can you give us an insider's take on the schizophrenic image of the hard-faced young white man, shouting "If they're black, send 'em back!", his arm raised in a Nazi salute exposing a Two-Tone badge on his lapel? This isn't a *isstake, I'm genuinely interested in the psyche of someone who can hate another race so much yet at the same time dance to the music. It can't just be the music either because the whole vibe of Two-Tone was black and white in harmony. John X

Phil Collins did claim that he might leave Britain if most of his income was taken in tax, which was Labour Party policy at that time for top earners. And he did, in fact, leave Britain for a tax haven in 1994 purely because he thought that he could do more for the little starving children if he was allowed to keep nearly all of his super rich income. His mission to rid Britain of the hated Thatcher was also complete.
Hots on
Duran Duran were the band of the eighties for me. Apart from a select few Madness songs, Ska/two tone is a crap genre generally. The Police were great though, they were a sort of rock/reggae group.
JFKvsNixon
2008 was the INTERNATIONAL CREDIT CRUNCH not a Goverment induced recession. I think that it was the Labour governments actions prior and after the "INTERNATIONAL CREDIT CRUNCH" that people are remembering.
