Hello,

 

When people ask me were I was born, I always tell them: "The Work House"

 

This is partly true for it was in the buildings of the former "Ecclesall Brielow Union Work House".

 

By the time I came on the scene however, the whole place had been renovated and renamed: "Nether Edge Hospital."

Sheffield Union workhouse became Netheredge Hospital and Firvale hospital and workhouse became the Northern general hospital, hope this helps.

Slight confusion here...

 

There were two Poor Law Unions which covered Sheffield.

 

The Sheffield Union Workhouse was at Firvale

(this replaced an earlier building at Kelham Island)

 

The Ecclesall Bierlow Union Workhouse was at Nether Edge.
