How much do midwives get paid?

Recommended Posts

Hi, im wanting to know if there are any midwives on here and how much they get paid for different roles I.e community midwife or hospital based etc. Im starting the access course in September to go to university and would also like to know when you get to start going to hospitals to see what's happening etc. If anyone is a midwife on here I'd really appreciate any info on it. Thanks

hey hun i too have applied for the september access course to the go onto uni to study midwifery, im unsure to be honest on how long until you train on the job but ive been chatting on a midwife/student forum and some of the girls have passed the access course we are going for and been applying for the midwifery course for the 3rd and 4th year running as there are limited places, i think its really sad its taking this long just to get on a course bless them...

im just going to concentrate on passing the years access course then hope against hope im not applying for midwifery as long as some, i bet its heartbreaking:mad:

I'd say if money is your main concern at this point then your doing it for the wrong reasons because the answer is not very much.

I don't know about the access course but once you start the course (or at least you used too) you go on placement in the first 6 months. I'm old though so it may have all changed. Agenda for change band 5 is the starting point and then depending on qualifications and interviews you work your way up.

You don't get to do midwifery placement on access course, to pass access placement unit u only need to have 12 hours placement and this is generally in a nursing home or like. I know as I'm doing it now to do midwifery hopefully. There r 2 places for non uni students in Sheffield so I'd extremely difficult. The problem is getting work experience uni places r extremely limited the people that r getting them r lucky enough to have got some midwifery experience, either community or hospital. For most of them it won't be first attempt to get in, but best thing to do is try sure start mother and baby groups etc in ant spare time as it really will give u more chance than someone who had Jyst done the minimum to pass the course.

i know this isnt my thread but thanks for that hun, ive been told my the collage that you just need to pass the access course to be able to apply for the midwifery course, they never said anything about working with kids or nursing home etc, they just said it helps to have life experiance, such as bringing up your own children.... but i can see your piont about maybe trying sure start etc to gain a little extra to add to your application then just the access course to maybe give your self a better chance

but isnt that just personal preferance wether you want to do that or is it part of the course?

i got accepted on the access course 5 years ago but found out i was pregnant, did the full day interview/open day, met the tutor, did the little maths/english test, they never mentioned volunteering anywhere, just that i need 60 credits etc to pass etc?

im confused now lol, id love your advice on this myself seeing as though your doing it already then you will know more then ive been told:)

U need to check with the uni on what they require I know one if the girls on my course going to uni out of sheffield needs 200 hours experience either Witt new born babies or pregnant women which is so hard to do but is possible. We have been told for anyone seriously wanting to get on do as much as u can volunteering because although the access gives u the academic qualification to get on it's so competative everyone is going out doing extra to ensure a place so with out it we don't stand a chance of getting on. I don't think u have to do the placement unit but I think it's 12 credits so it's best to do as many as u can as 39 need to be merit or above I think 12 at level 2 so doesnt leave u many in which u can just pass. They r minimums to get in so it's not just getting passes

are you doing nursing (hence the work experience in a nursing home) with a view to specialising in midwifery?

I have applied yet but am going to apply for midwifery in sheff and nursing in derby to keep my options open then if I don't get in midwifery will do nursing then tag on midwifery. As it's so hard to get experience with babies we have been advised to go to nursing homes in nean time until we get a place that Is more relevant. Luckily I'm bot going in a nursing home Iv got a jib in a private hospital which will go towards my work experience unit for course and be relevant for the nursing course but am still trying to gain pregnancy and babie experience so i stand a chance of getting on
