Mubarak steps down, and hands power to army.

Washington and Israel need a compliant reliable regime in the client State that is Egypt.

The bought and paid for Egyptian Army is the vehicle of choice.

The second best option (it won't be admitted publicly) would be an overtly hostile Islamic or Islamic led regime, The Israeli tail will then wag the yankee dog and a 'clear and present danger' will be manufactured that compels military intervention.

A worse option would be a secular moderate democratic regime that is independent of US/Israeli influence.

We are assuming that the protestors actually represented the views of the majority of Egyptians. It seems outside Cairo not many were agreeing.

A few hundred thousand on the streets in a country of 80,000,000 can't be guaranteed to speak for everyone. The Rolling Stones have drawn bigger crowds but the government hasn't changed as a result.

Majority of Egyptians? I didn't think they were many Egyptians left just a few Coptics

You lot are a bunch of miserable buggers!

The people of Egypt have seen that they can make a difference. There's no going back to what was, or any semblance of it. They won't let it happen again and for the vast majority, a theocracy is also completely out of the question.

What the Egyptians have achieved is nothing short of fantastic.

I wish them prosperity and happiness for the future.

Will wine now flow from the fountains? Will food prices come tumbling down? Will the Egyptians see their weekly wages increase tenfold? How long will it take for tourism to recover? One of, if not the largest sources of income for Egypt. How long will it take for democracy in it's truest sense to establish itself

It will take a long time for these things to happen but the problem with all revolutions is that the mobs perception of how quickly the rewards of revolution should manifest themselves always bear little reality to how long these changes for the better actually do happen,,, if ever in some cases. The mobs meanwhile grow impatient, the new leaders loose their credibility and the agitators with their various agendas exploit the situation.

No doubt the leaders of Iran are studying the events in Egypt very closely. What better way to work towards the destruction of their arch enemy Israel than by fomenting discontent in the largest, most populated Arab country in the middle east and installing a hard line Islamic leadership.

Mubarak may be gone but perilous and unceratin times lie ahead and that's a no brainer !!

That would be the ideal scenario if the secular moderate democratic regime continues to exist in peace with Israel. That would also save the American taxpayer several billion dollars a year in aid to the country.

As for your "clear and present danger" scenario that's just a load of crap.

Try to get your ideas from another source other than the writings of Tom Clancy

I was thinking that too, not sure how Brit Pat twists that to be the worst option.

I don't think US aid will end though, we (US & UK) still give aid to countries that are already democratic like India, as well as other not so democratic ones like China.
