Ive just seen this thread. Why not enrol him in a beginners kickboxing class?

Kicking (due to its nature) burns a lot more calories than punching and is much better for weight loss.

In Kickboxing we do punches, kicks, knees and elbows all against striking pads.

People have lost serious amounts of weight and have subsequently toned up just by coming to the Beginners kickboxing classes. If it is one-one you are after our Instructors can also be booked for a one-one Kickboxing/Fitness session.

Hey Gnomi,.

Like you say he's only 17 so you don't want to force him into something that will do more harm than good. Whats more when looking for a personal trainer make sure you find one that understands his plight.

For example don't go with the trainer that has great genetics and has never been overweight in his life, find one that has been there done that with pictures to prove it. These are the guys that can get you into shape!

I think you need to provide a little more info

Is he overweight? If so by how much?

You say his diet is good? Can you elaborate, how many calories is he eating what types of food etc.

I've recently dropped 11 kg (nearly 2 stone) and can tell you exercise was only a very small part of that. I was overeating like crazy and didn't even realise it.

If he is 17 years old, then I would imagine a Personal Trainer would be about the worst and the most boring option for him.

Why not join a sporting activity where he can mix and socialise with other people at the same time, make new friends + get a better social life. If the activity is viewed to be fun he is more likely to stick with it and see success in the longer term.

There are numerous options out there from martial arts classes, to team sports, to fitness classes and all the way to outdoor activitys.

Be careful of Personal Trainers, some are very good, however from what I have seen in gyms, many seem to be little more than gym instructors that charge £25 - £30 an hour to take you around the machines.

Try joining a few clubs and find something that he will enjoy taking part in. If he enjoys it, he will go week after week + its far cheaper than paying for a personal trainer.

I was thinking exactly the same thing, he will enjoy kickboxing classes a lot more than just going round a few exercise machines and weight machines. A Kickboxing class will burn between 500 and 1000 calories an hour. It is also a lot of fun and youll meet a lot of people while doing it. Also the skills you will learn are invaluable.

Anyone here used/curently using a personal trainer? How often do you use them? Good for beginners?

Also, anyone any recommendations for them in the Sheffield area?

I would like to get my strength improved, I think that I would rather use a PT to get the basics right for the specific techniques. I assume they can be expensive though which is why I'm asking how often they are needed and do you still tend to work out without one?

You would be best attending a fitness class, there are loads out there from zumba, to martial arts, to circuit to military type fitness

From what I have seen, personal trainers in gyms appear to be little more than glorified gym instructors who take you round the machines and charge £30 for the session.

If you took part in a class, at £4-£5 you could have 7 classes for the price of one fitness session with a personal trainer.
