L00b
Scottish, Irish and Welsh are Gaelic languages, all descended from Celtic languages. Irish and Scottish are closer to one another, than relative to Welsh. See more details here.

Chris_Sleeps
Scottish, Irish and Welsh are Gaelic languages, all descended from Celtic languages. Including Breton and Cornish. They are the closest languages to pre saxon-English that still exist today.
L00b
Including Breton.I know My maternal grandmother was from Britanny, and spoke Breton fluently. It's a shame she passed some years before we moved to Ireland, I'm sure she'd have enjoyed a visit.

It's a dead language essentially, like Anglo-Saxon is dead, but a whole host of words are left alive. A wee bairn, for example. While we had the Norman influence on our language the Scots were far from immune, and after a long period of Stuart rule and the weakening of Gaelic as a force, Middle English slowly crept in.
