Total in one year (for a few thousand miles) £165.00 According to my car's computer I've averaged just over 32 mph since the car was new. So in an average year I spend around 390 hours behind the wheel. That is 16 1/4 days out of my life which I find quite horrendous. However if I were to ride a bike I'd be lucky to average 8 mph. That would mean giving away another 48 days of my life every year. Not only that I couldn't take my friends out for a nice bar meal in Derbyshire of an evening. Worse still I'd probably get knocked off my bike by a truck and killed. I might carp a bit about the amount a car costs but a bike wouldn't make savings worth the price I'd be asked to pay. Magilla
However if I were to ride a bike I'd be lucky to average 8 mph. Indeed, if I used my bike for my daily commute, well I couldn't without using the train aswell, which would cost me around £7,000 more than I pay at the moment per year to use my car for the same journey. perplexed
I also have a car. (For some reason, people tend to think if you have a bike it precludes you from having one!) I just gave my running costs for the bike for a year. The bike isn't an answer for every journey, that is patently obvious. However, it could replace many journeys. I ride into town for example. Takes about 15 minutes or so, and I get to dump the bike for nowt in the city centre. In rush hour driving, it takes about 35-40 minutes. No contest. GrannyGranny
Fuel £2880 Insurance £560 Tax £120 Servicing £240 And it's still cheaper than the train (barring depreciation) Forgot parking for work £240 Still cheaper than the train! Yet depreciation may add another 50% to that figure, still cheaper than the train?
